BTS: Mosaic Hop At The Beach
Behind the scenes creating product photography for Kees Brouwerij’s Mosaic Hop
Hi everyone! How are you doing today? So glad you could join us. We feel like we could all use a day at the beach right about now during these colder days here in Cologne, Germany.
So when Chris and I spent a couple of days at the coast of the Netherlands, we went to the wonderful village of Breskens - which is filled with gorgeous beaches and a lot of dogs. Heaven, right? When visiting new places we usually love to explore the local markets and stores, to look for colorful designs and brands to work with. And we were in luck: We discovered the colorful beers and drinks of Kees Brouwerij, a brewery based in Middelburg. With that fresh taste of summer and the incredibly colorful product design, we decided to set up a beach inspired shoot for Mosaic Hop. Cause life really is better at the beach, right?
Our first set - Swinging into the perfect beach day
We wanted to start our beach inspired product shoot by creating a set that incorporates all the main elements of a perfect beach day: warm sunlight, a clear blue sky, soft sand beneath your feed. We topped the whole thing off by adding some tropical flowers and sea shells to give it a more surreal, retro vacation feeling. Some palm leaves and greenery added extra texture to the holiday-mode.
We chose direct, warm light through one main spotlight to create the feeling of summery heat, the sun shining right down in the mid-day sun. A yellow backdrop served as an extra pop of color on the fine sand - and made the little hill of sand perfect for the products to sit in.
Next to creating imagery of the cans sitting in the sand, bathing in the sunlight, we wanted to bring another extra element into our set-up: voila, a swing! A truly dreamy scenario, looking out at the water and swinging into the perfect day. Chris built a little wooden swing for this scenario, with some natural rope and tied it together at one of our c-stands. We created photographs, as well as a stopmotion clip to show the can’s swinging in a playful yet entertaining way. A real scroll-stopper for any website or social media channel.
Set No. 2 - Getting your feet wet
After spending some time in the sun, there’s nothing better than a refreshing dip in the ocean, right? We totally agree.
For that reason we used our glass water tank to create smooth waves that the products could bath in. We created the waves with a leaf blower, our hands as well as hair-dryer, therefore forming different kinds of waves and ripples in the water.
Taking the photographs and stopmotion clips with a tripod allowed us to focus completely on creating nice movements. By facing the camera down in a straight angle, we set up a flatlay look for the images to let the viewer focus completely on the cans in the water.
Wanna go to the beach with us?
By creating two different sets that incorporate the essentials of a perfect beach day, we created two chapters in the story of a lovely beach day. The scenes told the story, but the colorful products of Kees Brouwerij remained the main focus of the imagery.
