BTS - Oediups Mannenliefde - Color Straight From Our Workshop
Welcome to another Light And Day Studio BTS! We love taking you with us and showing you our process of creating shoots, as well as our sets and props. As a full-service photography and video studio, we enjoy the hands-on part of every project we take on. While Chris is (sorry, in this case we are quite stereotypical) way more talented when it comes to measuring our props correctly, finding the right materials and of course using a saw without losing any fingers (10/10 so far, we are very proud), Anna is our concept, art direction and paint department.
We are lucky enough to have our own little workshop in the basement of our studio and designing unique pieces for our photoshoots is one of our great pleasures in the whole photoshoot process.
When coming up with a concept for Oedipus Mannenliefde, one of the first things that struck us was the vibrant design and color scheme. A beer in pink and yellow and a brand that promotes diversity and inclusivity? Count us in to be amazed and inspired! For this shoot it was our goal to create lifestyle imagery with a model that captured the brand’s good vibrations, as well as still life imagery of the beer within our set.
Creating geometric props
We decided to create geometric props in the beer’s color scheme, to keep it all matchy-matchy and therefore very visually intriguing. As the beer has a pattern and unique typography, we wanted to keep the colors vibrant, but any other props very minimal to make sure the product stood out as the main focus.
We chose a yellow triangle as the main prop for this shoot, designing it large enough for our model to stand behind it, hold it and generally play with it. To create the vibrant color contrast we wanted, we chose our pink paper backdrop for this shoot.
Styling & Lighting
As our color scheme focused on bright pink and yellow, we needed to stick with this palette in our model’s outfits and styling details. We chose a bright pink monochromatic look, which is only broken up by some lilac-orange socks that our model wears for a very images.
For the lighting set-up we wanted to work with enough light to make the colors pop, but we also had to be aware of our model’s rather fair skin tone. To make sure both areas were equally well lit, we went for a diffusor panel, that distributed the light evenly throughout the set and still left a certain punch in the colors and eyes.
So we got our geometric props, a clear color pattern and monochromatic outfit choice - we are ready for our model Lucy to come in and bring this whole thing to life. Are you readyyy?
Good Vibrations
We feel very strongly about creating a positive, empathetic atmosphere during all of our shoots, especially when working with models. We believe that everyone - from hair and make up artist to model and stylist - can do their best work when they feel safe, appreciated and welcomed. So having a little chat before starting the shoot, providing enough tasty food and drinks for the entire team and playing funky tunes to set the mood is an absolute MUST for all of our productions, no matter how small or big.
Our wonderful model Lucy is an energetic bundle of good vibes and an infectious smile - so we were very happy to have her on board for this project. When working with a model we always make to sure to have lots of posing ideas and examples on hand - and of course we create a specific shotlist that is unique for each project that we shoot.
For this lifestyle project we had to find a way to highlight the product and incorporating the props and set-design, all while making it feel easy, happy and in keeping with the tone of our shoot. We came up with a combination of portraits, medium portraits and full body shots in funky poses, that underlined the playful aspects of this concept.
We are very organised and love a good structure when it comes to our photoshoots - but a lot of times great images are created spontaneously in the moment. That’s why we always like to leave a little room for the unexpected in every schedule, so we can make sure to work as creatively with our team as possible.
