Product Photography 101: The Hero Shot
Product photography is an incredibly electic genre, from flatlays to detailed scenes, color, textures or different props. They all have one main goal in common: highlighting a brand’s product and letting it shine. A commercial favorite - and absolute classic - in product photography is the hero shot.
The well-deserved name stems from the way this shot is composed: in an all-mighty, heroic pose, the product is set up to look like the hero of it’s own story. That’s what we all want to be, right?
You can achieve this look through different aspects:
photograph the product from a frog’s perspective, so it’s seem even bigger and more heroic
let your light set up speak: set a spotlight or any light set up that sets a clear focus on the product
play with color and textures: you can use color or textures to draw the viewer’s eye straight to the hero of the story
Hero shots can be used for onlineshops, social media or even as campaigns, as they do go perfectly with typography. It’s definitely important to make sure, that any elements used in the product photo - such as props, details, textures etc - do not overshadow or overpower the product, as it’s the main attraction.
